How can Medicon Valley become Europe’s strongest Life Science Hub?

Apr 28, 2026

How can Medicon Valley in the Greater Copenhagen Region become Europe’s strongest life science hub? Today in Altinget.se Sverige, Jan Juul Christensen, CEO of Greater Copenhagen, and I highlight a central message: "Greater Copenhagen has extraordinary potential — but unlocking it requires fewer cross‑border barriers, stronger political coordination, and smoother mobility for companies and talent." More than 85,000 people work in the region’s private life science sector, and over 350 companies, universities, hospitals, and organisations collaborate across the Øresund. The foundation is internationally recognised. Yet the article points out that the region still faces challenges attracting venture capital and that researchers, students, and specialists encounter administrative obstacles when moving between Denmark and Sweden. This is exactly why Medicon Valley Alliance is engaged with the Cross-border Talent Bridge Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak supported project. The project aims to make it easier for businesses and highly skilled professionals to work across the Øresund - strengthening the region’s competitiveness in a global race for talent and innovation.

In the article, we advocate for:

  • Reducing administrative and legal barriers for international specialists
  • Improving clarity around social security, digital IDs, and cross‑border commuting
  • Supporting companies that want to recruit and retain talent on both sides of the Sound
If Medicon Valley in the Greater Copenhagen region is to stand alongside global life science hubs such as Boston and Basel, coordinated action is needed. The potential is here — but realizing it requires concrete decisions and a shared commitment to collaboration. Strengthening mobility strengthens the region and is a win-win for both Denmark and Sweden! Removing barriers is the first step. Click here to read the full article.
