Medicon Valley is not a promise; it is a functioning, cross-border life science power hub already delivering on the ambitions outlined in the Draghi report.
The takeaway from Brussels is clear: Europe’s competitiveness will not strengthen itself.
It requires political courage to defragment, deregulate, and better align systems across procurement, tech transfer incentives, startup investment, and market access. Above all, it requires real cross-border collaboration in a triple helix between academia, hospitals, and industry.
Over the past three days, Medicon Valley Alliance CEO Anette Steenberg, Head of Project Development & Fundraising Mathias Meijer, and Director of ReproUnion Management Unit Kristine Koppelhus have been deeply engaged in the Brussels ecosystem, participating in meetings and discussions at the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Nordic House.
The purpose was clear: to listen, learn, contribute, and strengthen dialogue on Europe’s future competitiveness in the life sciences.
One message consistently emerged throughout the visit:
What sets Medicon Valley apart is not only strong networks between academia, hospitals, and industry, but proven partnerships delivering real outcomes. Better treatments. Innovative therapies. New technologies reaching patients.
This is exactly the kind of ecosystem Europe needs to scale.
For almost 30 years, Medicon Valley has built cross-border collaboration that translates into R&D excellence and tangible impact for patients and society. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, the region has focused on selected areas of excellence where it can provide leadership, including:
- Diabetes
- Reproductive Health & Women’s Health
- Microbiome research
- Cell & Gene Therapy & ATMPs
- Biomanufacturing — from large-scale biologics to advanced therapies
- Research infrastructures and sustainable healthcare
These are not only regional strengths, they are strategic assets for Europe’s future competitiveness.
Medicon Valley is already contributing.
And the ambition is to do even more.
The visit to Brussels resulted in sharper insights, stronger alliances, and a clear understanding of the next steps ahead.
Now, the real work continues – also at Medicon Valley Alliance.
