3 Q&A Interview with Håkan Brandt, General Manager at New MVA Member Beckhoff Automation

Feb 6, 2026

Which kind of problems does Beckhoff solve for the life science industry?
Beckhoff supports the life science industry by solving challenges related to automation, flexibility, and efficiency in laboratory and production environments. Through advanced technologies such as XPlanar, XTS (eXtended Transport System), and MTP (Module Type Package), Beckhoff enables highly flexible and scalable automation concepts. XPlanar and XTS allow precise, independent movement of samples and products, reducing bottlenecks and supporting complex, parallel workflows, while their contactless or low-wear designs are well-suited for cleanroom applications. MTP enables modular, interoperable production systems, helping life science companies adapt quickly to new processes, smaller batch sizes, and evolving regulatory requirements.

What do you see as the key challenges facing the industry and affecting your business in 2026?
Life sciences are rapidly evolving toward personalized therapies (e.g., cell & gene therapies, small-batch medicines). These trends demand automation systems that are highly adaptable and capable of handling diverse workflows without lengthy retooling. Traditional fixed-path systems are less suitable for such dynamic needs. Cost pressures and time-to-market are another topic; Pressures to reduce costs while accelerating innovation and product launch timelines push life science companies toward automation to streamline processes. Beckhoff’s solutions that reduce space usage, minimize maintenance, and integrate multiple functions can be a competitive advantage here.

Why have you chosen to join Medicon Valley Alliance?
MVA facilitates networking, cross-sector dialogue, and business development events that help members build relationships beyond their core industry, particularly in segments like lab automation, manufacturing technology, and digital transformation – areas aligned with Beckhoff’s offerings.
