Executive Club Dinner highlights the strategic importance of cross‑border collaboration in Medicon Valley

May 12, 2026

At a time when patients, talent and global investments are increasingly mobile, cross‑border collaboration is no longer optional – it is a strategic necessity. This message set the scene at the recent Medicon Valley Alliance Executive Club Dinner, which brought together C‑level executives from across the life science ecosystem in the Øresund region.

The exclusive, invitation‑only dinner provided a trusted forum for strategic dialogue on how Denmark and Sweden can strengthen their joint position in an increasingly competitive global life science landscape.

Turning proximity into strategic advantage

With world‑class research, clinical excellence and innovation environments located just 40 kilometres apart, Medicon Valley holds a unique position. Yet unlocking its full potential requires deliberate, structured collaboration across borders, institutions and sectors.

This was exemplified by the recently signed collaboration agreement between Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen and Skåne University Hospital in Malmö/Lund, which aims to create larger, more impactful research collaborations and accelerate clinical innovation by leveraging complementary strengths on both sides of the Øresund.

During the evening, the strategic ambitions behind the collaboration were presented by Malene Fischer, Deputy Chief Executive and Research Director at Rigshospitalet, and Stefan Jovinge, President of Research and Education at Skåne University Hospital. They shared perspectives on how closer integration between leading clinical environments can enhance research quality, unlock new development pathways and ultimately benefit patients.

Competing globally for talent, capital and impact

Throughout the discussion, a central theme was the need for Medicon Valley to act as a coherent region on the global stage. In a world where capital, talent and innovation move quickly, fragmented efforts are no longer sufficient.

Participants emphasised that strong cross‑border collaboration can:

  • strengthen the region’s attractiveness to international talent
  • support larger, more competitive research and clinical development projects
  • increase visibility and credibility among global investors and industry partners

At the same time, collaboration was framed not as an abstract ambition, but as a practical leadership challenge requiring trust, shared governance models and long‑term commitment from decision‑makers across organisations.

A forum for trusted strategic dialogue

The Executive Club Dinner underlined the value of providing senior leaders with a confidential space for open discussion on shared challenges and opportunities. By bringing together executives from biotech, pharma, medtech, healthcare, academia and investment, the Executive Club supports strategic alignment and relationship‑building across Medicon Valley.

The evening concluded with a shared recognition that stronger cross‑border collaboration is one of the region’s most powerful tools for creating patient impact, attracting global investments and sustaining long‑term competitiveness.
