3 Q&A interview with Kristina Thored, Vice President CDMO, MVA member Galenica

Oct 1, 2024

1) What are the key advantages to being in the Swedish-Danish Medicon Valley region?

Galenica was founded in Malmö in 1999, at a time when the area was dominated by larger pharmaceutical companies but lacked the presence of a more agile and specialized CDMO. With the growth of the Medicon Valley life science cluster—encompassing global companies, biotech start-ups, and leading universities and research institutions—the region has become a crucial element of Galenica’s success over the past decades.

Our project model is built on close collaboration with our clients, encouraging face-to-face meetings whenever possible. This approach is greatly supported by our strategic location within Medicon Valley, which facilitates easy, in-person interactions and strengthens partnerships.

2) What are Galenica’s must-win battles for the foreseeable future?

Our people are at the heart of our success, so a key priority is to maintain and continually develop a highly skilled workforce capable of delivering the innovative solutions our clients require across a diverse range of projects.

As the CDMO landscape grows increasingly competitive, with many smaller players being acquired by global companies, we are committed to ensuring operational efficiency and delivering high-quality results with faster turnaround times. At the same time, we aim to retain the flexibility and personalized service that come with being a smaller, more agile organization.

Finally, strengthening our partnerships within the Medicon Valley and expanding our reach beyond the region will be crucial to maintaining our competitive edge and driving future growth.

3) What types of companies does Galenica collaborate with?

Galenica partners with a wide range of companies, offering support from pre-formulation trials to analytical validations, process development, and manufacturing for both clinical trials and commercial production. Our clients range from small start-ups with visionary ideas, where we provide expertise in everything from selecting the right dosage form to full-scale commercial manufacturing, to large pharmaceutical companies that turn to us for support during peak workload periods. Regardless of the project’s size or complexity, we customize our services to meet each client’s specific needs and ensure the best possible outcomes.
