3 Q&A interview with Lin Bateson, Chief Executive at BioPartner UK, about Anglo-Nordic Life Science Days

May 30, 2023

1) What was the main attractions at this year’s Anglo Nordic?

I’m glad that your question is in the plural because the conference has several important elements that appeal to different types of delegates. Singling out one aspect would be too difficult!
The Investors want to see new opportunities; the presenters would like investment; and everybody wants to hear about the latest investment trends from the panellists. But above all, the objective is to MEET the other delegates, in-person, and so I think the 1:1 partnering is the most appreciated – closely followed by networking at the Ambassador’s Residence, and the buzz of the exhibition area during informal networking throughout the day.

2) What are European and British investors looking for in Nordic life science?
From a general viewpoint the Nordic countries have always been collaboratively harnessing regional strengths and expertise in university hospitals, academic institutions, and the private sector to drive innovation. There is a ‘can-do’ attitude and the Nordic brand is now very attractive, with promise for integrated financial and clinical trial structures that will make it even easier to do business.

3) How do you think Brexit has affected cross fertilization between British and Nordic life science?
Despite early worries around Brexit, it looks like it has not had a permanent impact on the appeal of the UK as a springboard to global growth, and as a source of partners for Nordic life science organisations. The Memorandum of Understanding signed at the Swedish Ambassador’s residence in May 2002 confirmed a commitment to cooperation on antimicrobial resistance, sustainability, manufacturing processes, innovation, and genomics. It was fantastic to hear the Swedish Ambassador’s enthusiasm and determination to build on this, when she hosted the Anglonordic pre-conference Reception this year.
